St. Panteleimon Church

This Orthodox temple was declared a national art monument. Located in the courtyard of the bishop of Vidin. It is one-nave, half-dug in the ground, with semi-cylindrical vault, placed under the double-pitched roof. There is a large, slightly elongated apse and a small, dimly lit porch with an entrance on the south side. Its walls are of stonemasonry, the roof goes toothed cornice of stone and four rows of bricks. According to the inscription over the door, it was built on a – old foundations in 1634, by 1636 the church was painted. On the upper walls are the images of saints, and on the vault – Gospel scenes. In its centre in two medallions are depicted Jesus and Virgin Mary. Preserved Slavic inscription over the entrance of the nave noted that painting of the church took place in 1646 when Sofronius was Metropolitan in Vidin. The old iconostasis is not preserved. There are two icons with valuable fittings made by the famous jewelers of Vidin, from 1823 and 1832.  “St. Panteleimon“ church is connected with the name of Sophronius of Vratsa.
