Medieval Fortress "Kamaka"

The Fortress "Kamaka" ("The Stone") is located about 1 km west of Oryahovo on a hill from where there was an excellent visibility over the region around.

The castle was built in the IX century and was an important frontier post - part of the defense system along the northern border of the Bulgarian state. In the past here was passed the important Roman road "Via Singiduno usque ad Constantinopolim per ripam Danubii". Along the fort passed also the crusades troops of the Hungarian Kings Sigismund (1396) and Wladyslaw Jagiello (1444).

Nowadays, relatively well preserved is only the 9-meters watch-tower.
