Today, 8 October, the city of Veliko Tarnovo opens the 20th anniversary edition of the International Tourism Fair “Cultural Tourism.” Following the success and productive work during the Global Conference on Wine Tourism held in Plovdiv, the Ministry of Tourism continues its active international dialogue, this time focusing on cultural tourism through the prestigious exhibition in Veliko Tarnovo.Over the next three days, the former Bulgarian capital will bring together municipalities, institutions, tourism companies, cultural centers, universities, civil organizations, and artists from Bulgaria and abroad. The forum is recognized as the most authoritative platform in the country for presenting cultural heritage, new tourism products, and successful partnerships between culture and tourism. This marks the twentieth consecutive year that the Ministry of Tourism has been a partner of the event.“We are working actively to promote Bulgaria as a year-round destination for cultural tourism — through national and international campaigns, digital platforms, thematic routes, and partnerships between tourism and cultural organizations. We are encouraging sustainable tourism — one that preserves the authenticity of our heritage while creating added value for local communities,” said Minister of Tourism Miroslav Borshosh at the opening of the jubilee edition. This year, the Bulgarian cultural phenomenon — the community cultural centers — once again make a strong statement of their role as an inseparable part of Bulgaria’s identity, presenting living traditions, community spirit, and the richness of intangible cultural heritage within the exhibition.During the opening ceremony, Mayor Daniel Panov expressed his gratitude to Minister Miroslav Borshosh for his active support and for initiating a new level of partnership with Bulgarian municipalities. He emphasized that effective cooperation between national and local authorities is the foundation of sustainable sectoral development. “The support of the Ministry of Tourism for municipalities is key to developing sustainable and balanced tourism across all regions of the country. Only through joint efforts can we showcase Bulgaria’s wealth and create conditions for stronger interest in domestic destinations,” said Daniel Panov.Over the years, the event has become a signature forum for Bulgaria, and this anniversary edition will place a special focus on the richness and diversity of the nation’s intangible cultural heritage. “The ‘Cultural Tourism’ exhibition is a symbol of continuity and a vision for the future. Bulgaria possesses invaluable cultural heritage — the cornerstone of our identity and our competitiveness as a destination. I am glad that Veliko Tarnovo has hosted this forum for two decades, proving that culture is the heart of the tourism experience and a driving force for regional development,” added Minister Borshosh. The program of the anniversary edition includes a presentation of honorary awards to individuals and organizations contributing to the forum’s development, a national conference titled “Intangible Cultural Heritage – The Unadulterated Charm of Destinations”, and an award ceremony for winners of the National Student Contest for Best Tourism Concept. Other highlights feature the conference “The Festival – A Recipe for Revival” and a special exhibition by the National High School of Applied Arts “Tryavna School,” showcasing works in artistic woodcarving, interior design, and iconography, accompanied by live demonstrations.

Bulgaria showcases the Art of Wine Tourism to the World – 9th UN Tourism Global Conference opens in Plovdiv
2025-10-06T15:43:00
The 9th UN Tourism Global Conference on Wine Tourism was officially opened in Plovdiv. The forum brings together representatives of international organizations, academia, institutions, winemakers, and tourism experts from around the world under the theme “The Art of Wine Tourism.” Over the two-day program, discussions will focus on sustainability, digitalization, cultural routes, and the integration of wine tourism into national development strategies, alongside thematic panels and masterclasses featuring international experts.Minister of Tourism Miroslav Borshosh emphasized that hosting the conference marks a new starting point for the development of tourism in Bulgaria. “It is a true honor and excitement to be here together today. Plovdiv has the privilege and responsibility to be the stage for one of the most prestigious events in the world of tourism. This is a moment when we can show the true face of Bulgaria — an open, welcoming, and confident country that knows how to present itself to the world,” said Minister Borshosh.. He added that wine embodies all of this — it carries the soul of the people, the memory of the land, and the joy of life. “I am convinced that through this conference we will showcase the best we have to offer — our culture, history, traditions, and hospitality,” he concludedUN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili welcomed the guests with “Welcome to Plovdiv” and emphasized that wine tourism conferences are among the most inspiring and engaging forums. He thanked Bulgaria and the hosts for their excellent organization and noted that the main goal of the event is to present the country as the new face of wine and cultural tourism. According to him, while the world has long associated wine tourism with varieties like Bordeaux or Malbec, it is now time for Plovdiv and local grapes such as Mavrud to gain international recognition. Bulgaria offers a distinctive and authentic experience — one that begins right in Plovdiv. The Mayor of the host city, Kostadin Dimitrov, welcomed the participants with the words: “Welcome to the oldest living city in Europe.” He emphasized that for Plovdiv, this is not merely a forum, but an opportunity to showcase the city’s unique character. “Plovdiv combines authenticity and antiquity, modernity and innovation, culture, history, and future. It is a cultural, educational, logistical, and industrial center that attracts tourists both through its heritage and the development of wine tourism. Plovdiv is the only Bulgarian city that is not only ancient but also eternally alive and dynamically evolving,” said Dimitrov.Minister of Agriculture and Food Georgi Tahov also took part in the opening of the forum, emphasizing the importance of strong partnerships. He noted that cooperation between regions, tourism organizations, and winemakers from different countries can generate new ideas and define the future directions of wine tourism. According to him, this sector serves as a natural bridge between cultures, traditions, and economies, with the potential to bring communities together across borders. As part of the event, the Ministry of Tourism presented its new guidebook, “Wine Routes of Bulgaria,” developed in collaboration with UN Tourism. The publication brings together the country’s main wine regions and offers a comprehensive overview of traditional grape varieties and the cultural and culinary experiences associated with them. Its aim is to inform travelers and to position Bulgaria as a year-round wine tourism destination.During the opening of the conference, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between UN Tourism and the University of Food Technologies – Plovdiv. The document envisions the creation of an International Academy for Tourism and Wine, which will develop educational programs, international specializations, and experience exchange initiatives. “This partnership unites the state, the academic community, and the international expertise of UN Tourism. It is an investment in the future — in young people, knowledge, and sustainable development which will serve as a bridge between science and business, between tradition and new technologies, and will give Bulgaria a new advantage on the global tourism map,” said Minister Borshosh. The memorandum was signed by UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili and Prof. Dr. Galin Ivanov, Rector of the University of Food Technologies. The memorandum is valid until 2027 and includes specific initiatives aimed at developing human capital and linking academic education with practical tourism experience.

This is the world’s largest forum dedicated entirely to discussions about wine tourism. The very fact that the conference is taking place here shows that Bulgarian wine tourism is now looking toward international markets and is positioning itself alongside other established global destinations. This is a major step forward for the development of the sector. Through wine, gastronomy, and cultural heritage, Bulgaria can shape a distinctive identity on the global tourism map. Over the years, our winemakers have raised the quality of Bulgarian wine to high international standards, and when they combine that with a rich tourism experience, they achieve even greater success. That is why, together with local authorities and the industry, we support this sector and the people who build the image of Bulgaria,” stated Minister Borshosh.Sandra Carvão, Director of Market Intelligence, Policies and Competitiveness at UN Tourism, emphasized that the decision for Bulgaria to host the event after countries such as Argentina, Chile, Spain, and Italy is a strong recognition of Bulgaria’s place in global tourism. “Bulgaria is a wonderful host. This conference will not only strengthen the positioning of wine tourism here, but will also enhance the country’s role in the global development of tourism. Bulgaria is among the leaders in Europe in tourism revenue, and events like this create new jobs, support businesses, and promote regional cohesion. The combination of wine and gastronomy awakens all the senses and makes the experience much deeper and more authentic.”Plovdiv’s Mayor Kostadin Dimitrov stated that the forum is a historic opportunity both for the city and for Bulgaria. He emphasized that the Conference is not just a form of promotion, but also a message and opportunity — for Plovdiv to become a recognizable face of wine tourism on a global scale. “The city preserves millennia-old traditions, yet remains open to the future — that’s why it is a natural stage for such a forum,” he added. Ivaylo Kracholov, Mayor of Chirpan, recalled the municipality’s journey — from the first steps in developing a tourism strategy five years ago to its establishment as a destination rich in traditions, festivals, and new initiatives such as the “Winegrowers’ Routes.” He pointed out that Chirpan combines winemaking, culture, and events, is developing camper and camping tourism with the support of the Ministry of Tourism, and is ready to offer a competitive product on the international market. Hisarya’s Mayor, Iva Valcheva, emphasized that wine tourism goes hand in hand with balneo and spa tourism, and that municipalities — regardless of their size — must work together to position Bulgaria as a world-class destination.Gergana Todorova, founder of the platform WineTours.bg, highlighted that the conference is an opportunity to present Bulgaria as a year-round wine destination: “Our regions have stories and wines that deserve to be told to the world.”Petya Minkova, Chair of the Bulgarian Organization for Wine Tourism, pointed out that the global trend and current interest in wine tourism are focused on local, indigenous, and unique grape varieties, and that Bulgaria has an extraordinary amount to offer in this direction.Prof. Dr. Plamen Mollov, Director of the Institute for Systemic Innovations in Food and Wine at the University of Food Technologies – Plovdiv, announced that tomorrow a memorandum of cooperation will be signed between UFT and the UN Tourism Academy, through which the university will become the 11th official partner of the academy worldwide. “This is a tremendous honor for Bulgaria and for Plovdiv. Historic recognition for Bulgaria – The Ministry of Tourism and the Municipality of Hisarya bring the city into the elite of Thermal Europe
2025-09-30T16:23:00
Minister of Tourism Miroslav Borshosh and Mayor of Hisarya Iva Valcheva announced today that the city of Hisarya has been officially accepted as a member of the European Historic Thermal Towns Association (EHTTA).With this achievement, Hisarya takes its place among Europe’s most prestigious destinations with thermal traditions and cultural heritage. Founded in 2009 in Brussels, EHTTA brings together 50 members from 18 countries — including 37 municipalities and 13 associated organizations. The Association is recognized by the Council of Europe and has been an affiliate member of the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) since 2019.Earlier this year, a meeting at the Ministry of Tourism brought together Minister Miroslav Borshosh, Hans Hornig — Chair of EHTTA’s Scientific Committee and Heritage Advisor for the City of Baden, Austria — and Hisarya’s Mayor Iva Valcheva. The discussion focused on the city’s potential membership, noting that Hisarya meets all key criteria for participation in the network through its Roman heritage, historic thermal area, and developed tourism infrastructure.“Hisarya’s accession to EHTTA is a recognition not only of its centuries-old tradition in medical and spa tourism, its preserved Roman cultural heritage, and its mineral springs with proven healing qualities, but also of the successful cooperation between the state and local authorities. This is an important step in establishing Bulgaria as a leading SPA and balneological destination in Europe,” said Minister Miroslav Borshosh. The Minister added that tourism is much more than an economy — it shapes Bulgaria’s image and reputation worldwide — and reiterated that effective tourism policy is built through partnership between national government, local authorities, and the media. He emphasized that support for the regions and their international visibility is among the Ministry’s top priorities, highlighting upcoming national events such as the Global Conference on Wine Tourism, organized by the Ministry of Tourism in partnership with UN Tourism. This is a global forum that will bring leading international experts in this field of tourism to Bulgaria and will provide an opportunity for various Bulgarian wine destinations to be presented to a wide international audience. According to Minister Miroslav Borshosh, Hisarya’s admission to the European Association marks another step toward establishing the city and municipality as an important and influential tourist destination on both the European and global stage. New joint initiatives and partnerships in this direction are forthcoming.“It is an honor for me to announce Hisarya’s membership in the European Historic Thermal Towns Association. Hisarya deserves this recognition — and with it, so does Bulgaria. We worked together with the Ministry of Tourism, with scholars and experts. It was not easily achieved, but it is a success for the entire city and for Bulgaria,” said Mayor Iva Valcheva during the announcement.Kiril Valchev, Director General of the Bulgarian News Agency, described the event as a new reason for national pride, alongside the recent achievements of Bulgaria’s volleyball players. He noted that the news agency traditionally promotes Bulgaria as the country with the richest mineral waters in continental Europe and builds partnerships with municipalities to showcase their cultural and tourism initiatives.Hisarya is one of Bulgaria’s oldest balneological resorts, with a thermal tradition dating back to Roman times. The city symbolizes the connection between history, cultural heritage, and healing mineral springs, and is now part of a prestigious European network that will help further promote Bulgaria’s SPA and balneological destinations to international audiences.

Bulgarian Tourists Prefer Domestic Destinations Over Foreign Travel
2025-09-27T14:15:00
On World Tourism Day, the results of a national survey on travel and vacation attitudes were presentedOn the occasion of World Tourism Day, the Ministry of Tourism, in cooperation with the sociological agency “Trend”, presented a nationally representative survey on Bulgarians’ attitudes toward tourism and vacations in the country. The survey was commissioned by the Ministry of Tourism. The results show that Bulgaria remains the preferred destination for Bulgarian citizens — 51% of respondents stated that they choose to spend their holidays in Bulgaria, while only 10% prefer to travel abroad.[News Item Image]“Bulgaria is the leading choice for Bulgarian tourists, and that is the greatest recognition of our efforts. Accessibility, safety, and experience are the three main factors that define Bulgarian tourism. It is the duty of the state to create policies that encourage sectoral growth and ensure a high-quality product. These results are a clear sign that we are moving in the right direction — but also a reminder of our responsibility to work even harder. On World Tourism Day, we must remember that tourism is more than an economy — it is culture, identity, and an opportunity to present Bulgaria to the world,” said Minister of Tourism Miroslav Borshosh.Over the past year, most travelers took one or two journeys for the purposes of tourism, and 83% stated that they plan to travel within Bulgaria in the next six months. The main reasons for this preference include lower travel costs compared to trips abroad, shorter distances and easier logistics, familiar language and culture, as well as the country’s natural beauty and diversity. The survey also confirms positive attitudes toward the development of the tourism product — 67% of respondents believe it has improved over the past five years.[News Item Image]Seaside destinations remain the most popular, but interest in mountain, spa, and cultural-historical tourism continues to grow. Among the areas where tourists expect improvements are infrastructure, service quality, and cleanliness of tourist sites and the environment. You can watch more about the results of the presented study here here here:

Minister Miroslav Borshosh: The Eurozone is a strategic opportunity for a stronger image of Bulgaria and a more competitive tourism sector
2025-09-24T12:49:00
The national information campaign on the introduction of the euro in Bulgaria continued with events held in Veliko Tarnovo and Smolyan. The forums brought together representatives of local authorities, businesses, and citizens, who had the opportunity to hear from leading economists, financiers, and bankers, and to receive expert answers regarding the accession process. Participants in the discussions included eng. Daniel Panov, Mayor of Veliko Tarnovo; Temenuzhka Petkova, Minister of Finance; Iliya Lingorski, Member of the Governing Council of the Bulgarian National Bank; Valentin Mundrov, Minister of e-Government; Atanas Zapryanov, Minister of Defense; and Doncho Barbalov, Deputy Minister of Economy and Industry. In Smolyan, the meeting was hosted by Mayor Nikolay Melemov, with the participation of Dora Yankova, Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Public Works; Atanas Kostadinov, Deputy Minister of Environment and Water; and Rumyana Petkova, Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Policy.Minister of Tourism Miroslav Borshosh emphasized that Bulgaria’s accession to the euro area will contribute to a stronger international image of the country. “We live in a time when the world is facing multiple crises — climate, military, and financial. The nations that succeed are those that know how to unite and seek common solutions. The euro area is precisely such a union of developed countries that build strong economies, shared markets, and a common currency,” he said.Minister Borshosh pointed out that the tourism sector is among the best prepared for the transition to the euro, as it has long operated on a European scale. “For our hoteliers, restaurateurs, and tour operators, this transition is expected and welcome. The euro area makes Bulgaria a more visible and secure tourist destination. Membership will not automatically solve every problem, but it will highlight our strengths, facilitate business, and make communication between companies from different countries far more efficient,” he commented. As an example, the Minister referred to Croatia’s experience, where external factors such as the energy crisis and war created economic challenges, yet euro area membership itself brought only positive outcomes. “We must not confuse propaganda with reality — the problems of individual economies are not the problems of the euro area. That is a manipulation. The euro area is a major advantage, not only for tourism but for all sectors — a union that protects its members and carries global weight,” said Miroslav Borshosh. The Minister also highlighted the importance of tourism as a sector capable of creating sustainable economic opportunities in regions where other industries struggle to develop. He noted that tourism can serve as a response to the demographic crisis, as it provides jobs, retains young people, and gives them opportunities to build families and businesses in their home communities. He concluded by saying that Bulgaria’s goal is to build a forward-looking nation with a strong and exemplary economy, and that joining the euro area is an essential part of that path.

Visitors will be able to taste three or more wines from local and international varieties at each winery, purchase products at preferential prices, and enjoy exclusive wine-and-gastronomy experiences at wineries offering accommodation. “We already know that wine tasting alone is not enough — the true experience comes when wine is combined with culture, traditions, and emotions. That is what creates lasting memories and makes Bulgaria an attractive wine destination,” said Petya Minkova, Chairperson of the Bulgarian Organization for Wine Tourism (BOWT).Zhivko Enchev, Chairperson of the Bulgarian Association of Wine Professionals (BAWP), added that International Mavrud Day and urban wine festivals are examples of how joint efforts between institutions, municipalities, and associations create communities, promote local grape varieties, and make Bulgarian wine competitive on the global market. The “Follow the Wine Route” campaign of the Ministry of Tourism aims to synchronize the efforts of institutions, local authorities, wine associations, and the tourism sector. 2025-09-10T12:26:00
Аn information meeting on the introduction of the euro in Bulgaria was held in Dobrich as part of the national awareness campaign on the country’s accession to the euro area. The event was hosted by the Mayor of Dobrich, Yordan Yordanov, and attended by the Minister of Tourism, Mr. Miroslav Borshosh, and the Minister of Agriculture and Food, Mr. Georgi Tahov. The forum brought together representatives of local authorities, the business community, and citizens from the region, who had the opportunity to ask questions and receive expert answers.During the meeting, Minister Borshosh emphasized that the tourism sector has long been operating in European markets and thinking on a European scale, making Bulgaria’s accession to the euro area one of the most desired and anticipated developments for everyone involved in the industry. “There is no better option for Bulgarian tourism than for our country to be part of the euro area. When you tell foreign markets, “In this country, payments are made in euro” that’s a very strong and positive message,” the Minister noted. He recalled that the key discussions between the Ministry of Tourism and the sector began in the first months of the current government’s mandate, and that the information campaign is a natural continuation of this process. “It’s important to reach people through an honest conversation—beyond propaganda and prejudice—and to address real concerns,” added Minister Borshosh. He also outlined the main benefits of introducing the euro for the tourism sector, including greater financial security for the destination and a stronger international image of Bulgaria as a modern and reliable European country. “Tourism, in addition to being an important economic sector, has the unique role of presenting Bulgaria to the world. That is why it is even more significant, and the euro is crucial for its successful development,” concluded Minister Miroslav Borshosh.
