Bulgaria celebrates 30 years since the first award of the prestigious Blue Flag Award

In 2025, Bulgaria celebrates 30 years since it was first awarded the prestigious Blue Flag environmental award. Thanks to the active work of the Bulgarian Blue Flag Movement, Bulgarian beaches have been awarded this prestigious label since July 4, 1995, when it was first awarded to a beach in Sunny Beach. Since then, the programme has expanded and established Bulgaria as a leading destination for sustainable tourism.

"The Blue Flag programme is proof of Bulgaria's commitment to sustainable tourism. Certified beaches and harbours not only enhance our country's attractiveness as a tourist destination, but also set high environmental standards that protect nature and improve conditions for visitors. This is extremely important for the future of tourism and the protection of our Black Sea coast. The Ministry of Tourism will continue to work actively to promote good practices and sustainable development of the sector," Minister of Tourism Miroslav Borshosh said.

In the jubilee year 2025, the Bulgarian Blue Flag Movement reports a record number of nominations for the prestigious award - 30 beaches and marinas have been nominated. Among them are iconic locations such as the White Lagoon, Albena, Kranevo North, Golden Sands, Sunny Day, Sozopol-Central, Dunes, Arkutino, as well as the ports of Marina "Dinevi", Sarafovo, Chengene Skele and others.

This year the beaches Butamyata in Sinemorets, Kozluka and Robinson in Nessebar municipality for the first time apply for the prestigious award. Also, the ports of Pomorie and Burgas are seeking certification as part of efforts to better manage coastal areas.

To receive the Blue Flag award, beaches and harbours must meet high standards in four main areas: environmental education and information, water quality, environmental management and safety and services. These criteria ensure the sustainable development of coastal destinations and enhance the attractiveness of Bulgarian resorts.
