Asparuh's Rampart

The rampart is located northeast of the modern quarter of Asparuhovo, Varna, on sand bar that separates Varna Lake from the sea. It is believed to be the first anti-landing facility of the Proto-Bulgarians after their arrival in Varna in the autumn of 681. Its construction is associated with consolidation activities undertaken during the reign of Khan Asparuh. It obstructs the valley at the drainage of the lake between the Frangene and the Avren Plateau. Today the rampart is located more than 500 m from the shoreline in the central part of a city park. Its original length was probably about 3.5 km. Now there is a preserved section on the south side, about 1300 m long. It can be seen on both sides of the new sea-lake channel, mainly in the eastern part of the park in Asparuhovo. North of the new canal a fifty-meter long stretch is preserved. According to the Shkorpil brothers, its height at the beginning of the 20th century was 4 m, reduced today to 3 m, probably due to trenches on the ridge of the rampart during the First World War. The width of the embankment at the base is 10-15 m, and at the ridge - about 2 m.
